Massena Daily Courier-Observer: ENDORSEMENT 21st Congressional District: Bill Owens
(Transcription below. No online link)
Congressman Bill Owens has been an honorable and effective representative for the people of the north country during his first three years in the House of Representatives.
He has repeatedly taken positions that represent the moderate views of the people of the north country and has earned another term in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Owens has proved over and over he is right on the issues – from health care to agriculture and from the economy and jobs to women’s issues. His votes have been votes for the interests of the middle class, blue collar district he represents.
He and his staff have also worked hard over the past three years to gain a firm understanding of the local issues facing a sprawling congressional district that now stretches from Watertown to Glens Falls.
Mr. Owens career in the U.S. Air Force and his work on the redevelopment of the Plattsburgh provide us with a voice in Washington that understands the challenges facing our country’s national defense and economy. He has also demonstrated an ability, much like his predecessor John McHugh, to work with others across the aisle on the issues of importance to his district. Those traits make him the best qualified candidate in this race to serve the people of St. Lawrence and Franklin counties.
We like his opponent Matt Doheny on a personal level and respect his energy and work ethic. We simply disagree with his positions on the major issues facing our country.
We also credit St. Lawrence County native son Don Hassig for his less than traditional campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives, literally dancing from the shores of the St. Lawrence River to the Adirondack Mountains to share his concerns about pollutants and health issues and running up trespass violations nearly as often as his opponents are airing television commercials.
